Twelve-year-old Marlee doesn't have many friends until she meets Liz, the new
girl at school. Liz is bold and brave, and always knows the right thing to say,
especially to Sally, the resident mean girl. Liz even helps Marlee overcome her
greatest fear - speaking, which Marlee never does outside her family.
But
then Liz is gone, replaced by the rumor that she was a Negro girl passing as
white. But Marlee decides that doesn't matter. Liz is her best friend. And to
stay friends, Marlee and Liz are willing to take on integration and the dangers
their friendship could bring to both their families.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the kindness of Marlee and the moxie in Liz. The friendship they form is beautiful in a world that surrounds them with ugliness. Stories about this part of our country's history always makes me wonder- what would I have done? Definitely will be on all the possible Newbery lists!

Relic Master: The Lost Heiress by Catherine Fisher
Ok, I read the second one and the third one is on its way! I do like this series. It's interesting and fast paced. Now, the relationship between the master and the apprentice are nothing like my beloved Halt and Will from Ranger's Apprentice. Galen and Raffi have a very different relationship. Galen is very harsh and moody, although Raffi admires him.
So, they team up with the Sekoi- a cat-like creature- and Carys, who happens to be on the enemy's side- to find the 'lost heiress' who they believe can help restore the world to what the Makers designed originally before it was corrupted by Kest.
I think you would enjoy this series! I am waiting to see what others think!

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
Ok, here is another series that I am adding to my short list of series that I WILL continue to read the entire series! No, this isn't a new series. It came out in 2007. The fifth book in the series will be out in May. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I don't usually read entire series. I read the first one to know what the books are about, but that's it. There are toooooo many books to read to stick with 6 or 8 books in a series. But this one I will continue reading.
Josh and Sophie are 15 year-old twins that could possibly be the most powerful magicians the world has ever seen. They get wrapped up in the life of the alchemist, Nicholas Flamel, and his wife who have found the secret of immortality and are being chased by an evil magician. Flamel believes the twins are mentioned in a prophecy in the ancient Codex. They encounter all sorts of mythological and legendary beings as they stay one step ahead of the evil, Dee, and his allies.
Great action and suspense! Fantastic mix of history, mythology, science and more. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one!

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
I don't usually read entire series. I read the first one to know what the series is about so I can share that with library patrons. There are just too many books to read for me to take the time to complete a whole series. BUT, there are some for which I will make an exception! I love Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy!
